As a professional marketer, I am frequently asked to join various committees and organizations to use my expertise to help market a program or event. These have been rewarding experiences and I’ve met many wonderful people. But once in a while I come across an organization or individual doing something so wonderful that I feel I just have to raise my hand and volunteer to help without being asked.
That’s what happened when I heard the plans of Terry Mahoney, a fellow Ambassador at the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce. Terry is a broad-shouldered former Marine with an infectious laugh and sense of humor. But when he talks about the Sentinels of Freedom, and how he plans to raise money for them, he gets very emotional.
In November, Terry plans to tackle a six-day, 185-mile trek along the C&O Tow Path to raise money and awareness for the veteran’s group. The Sentinels of Freedom give life scholarships to worthy veterans who have shown that they want to excel and succeed despite massive disabling wounds.
Building up to this grueling trek, Terry, who competed as a “Super Clydesdale” triathaloner during his 1990 – 1996 stint in the Marines, has several major hikes planned as part of his training. The first will be a 49.5 mile hike on April 28 from downtown Baltimore to the grounds of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, MD. For more details on Terry and his upcoming hikes, and for information on how to contribute, see the full story.
